Brussels 1 June 06-The Basque company DTS OABE has won the European Business Award for the Environment in the product category for their project “Nupilac Hidro”. a water based, lacquer applied insecticide. This lacquer insecticide reduces the environmental inconveniences of the traditional lacquer insecticides. The award is the most prestigious in the field of environmental sustainable development.
The award has been granted to their product “Nupilac-Hidro” a lacquer insecticide witch reduces the environmental inconvenient of traditional lacquer insecticides.
Acería Compacta de Bizkaia S.A. has been selected as nominee in the Management Award for their project “ACB Integrated management system”.
The projects presented by both Basque companies were selected from over more than 130 nominees from 23 European countries.
The European Business Awards for the Environment reach this year their 10th edition. They were created in 1987 and are held every 2 years They are designed to recognize and promote, as an example to others, organizations which make an outstanding contribution to sustainable development. The Awards are given in four categories: Management, Product, Process and International Co-operation.
More than 130 projects,12 finalists
In Spain FE-BCSD organizes the national award scheme of the European Business awards for the environment. In January FE-BCSD selected and awarded 11 projects out of 75 projects presented by Spanish companies. The winners in Spain were:Cementos Lemona, Acciona Energía, Lemona Industrial with Acería Compacta of Bizkaia, Basf Española, DTS OABE, Rotártica, Cerámica Piera, Hera Holding, Somorrostro, Repsol YPF (accésit)
An independent panel of 12 jurors from across Europe met in Vienna, Austria, on Tuesday 21 February. The jury consists of representatives from industry, NGOs, academia and the public authorities. All jury members have environmental matters as their field of expertise.
The Spanish nominees competed with over more than 130 projects from 23 different countries. Finally, on the month of February the jury selected 12 final projects,witch included the ones from DTS-OABE and Aceria Compact of Bizkaia
Nupilac Hidro by DTS OABE
The company DTS OABE, with head office in Orozko (Vizcaya) , has been selected as finalist in the Product category for their project “Nupilac Hidro” a lacquer insecticide designed to reduce or even eliminate the environmental inconveniences of traditional lacquer insecticides.
The jury recognized that “the innovative aspect of this insecticide applied in a lacquer, which limits any cross-pollution, is not damaging to human health, requires five times less insecticide, with no emissions of VOC’s and with long-term efficiency. There is a vast replication potential in particular in low toxicity environments like schools, hospitals and catering establishments.
In the product category,companies are rewarded for the development of a new product or service that makes an outstanding contribution to sustainable development.
The Spanish company Acería Compacta de Bizkaia S.A. has been selected as nominee in the Management Award category of the European Business Awards for the Environment 2006. In this category, companies are rewarded for strategic visions and management systems which enable them to continuously improve their contribution to sustainable development.
Acería Compacta of Bizkaia S.A. is engaged in the awards competition with the project “ACB Integrated management system”. The jury’s rationale for selecting Acería Compacta of Bizkaia S.A. as nominee for the Management award states:
“The jury recognized in particular that this company has, unlike most competitors, both ISO 14.001 certification and EMAS registration. The company demonstrates achievements and further plans within their environmental management statement. The company has taken particular innovative measures, such as the installation of monitoring surveillance systems with a particular focus on gathering environmental pollution information. The company has a strong commitment for the local environment and has provided environmental awareness and training for employees. The company cherishes the relationship with and involvement of its stakeholders.”
Previous Spanish companies in the final
On the 2001-2002 edition a Spanish company from Murcia, COATO won the European Award in the category of management. It was the first time a Spanish company won this award. In this occasion, another Spanish company, HISPACOLD also reached the final in the category of product.
